MEMORY OF PRISON

Memória do Cárcere is an autobiographical account in which Camilo Castelo Branco describes the time he was imprisoned in Porto's Relação Prison between 1860 and 1861, accused of adultery.

A mixture of reality and fiction, with the usual Camillian irony and dramatisation, we get a glimpse of the gloomy atmosphere of the prison and the figures who populated it at the time. Camilo also takes the opportunity to criticise the judicial system and 19th century Portuguese society, exposing its injustices and hypocrisies.

The book is an example of Camilo's scathing and engaging style, which transforms even the adversity of prison into a fascinating literary story.
