Writers in the North’ Route

CCDR NORTE, the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation and Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal sign cooperation protocol .


A cooperation protocol was signed on Thursday 27 March to create the ‘Writers in the North’ route, a partnership between the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRN), the Regional Tourism Authority of Porto and Northern Portugal and the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, with a view to promoting and disseminating the tangible and intangible heritage of writers who were born, lived or created in Northern Portugal.

‘The regional territory has a large number of houses and house-museums of some of the most notable Portuguese-language writers, as well as public art or places of life and inspiration of these authors (...) The heritage assets to be included in the route respect the remarkable and diverse heritage, material and immaterial, in the context of Portuguese literature, as a result of the writers who were born, lived or created in the region,’ the protocol reads.

This initiative, which has the support of the Vila Nova de Famalicão Municipality, aims to map the places of life and creation of some of the most prominent figures in Portuguese literature associated with the North, including Camilo Castelo Branco, Agustina Bessa-Luís and Miguel Torga, and is part of the ‘Routes of the North’, launched by the CCDRN, in conjunction with the Porto and North Regional Tourism Authority.

In 2020, the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation launched the Literary Tower, which is a museum experience about Portuguese literature over the last eight centuries, curated by experts in the national literary context. Focussed on a list of representative authors and works, the tower provides a global, dynamic and everyday view of literary, cultural and historical aspects.
